In 1995, an Afghani engineer struck up a conversation with a shoeshine boy on a Kabul street. The boy had been a star student until his father's death made him the economic head of the household. From this meeting grew Aschiana (A home or a bird's nest), an organization which now assists over 2,000 of Kabul's working street children. Aschiana provides drop-in schools for boys and girls, home-based health clinics, vocational training, counseling and a wide range of programs that aim to give children choices about their futures. Aschiana's art program began as a way for children to tell their stories. Some surprising talent emerged, and Aschiana now houses a large collection of children's art.
